April – May 2011

On our farm, April is the month when we begin preparing our fields for planting.  We had a cold, wet April this year which made it very difficult to get out in the fields.  There were snow and rain showers that delayed this process, so that most of the disking did not take place until late April and early May.

Canola likes cooler weather, so there was urgency in trying to get it planted.  There were a lot of anxious moments and failed attempts to get in the field and get the crop planted before the weather started getting too warm.  We all took our turns on the tractor – Dan and I along with Carissa (15) and Hayley (13).  Carissa would stay on the tractor all day if we let her with the radio cranked up blasting loud country music across the field.
